Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE): During this test, a small tube-like probe will be passed into your esophagus so that clear ultrasound pictures can be taken of your heart structures. Your throat will be numb, and you will be given intravenous sedation so that you will be comfortable throughout the test. The tip of the probe sends out sound waves (ultrasound) that echo within the chest wall cavity. these echoes are picked up and create a picture of the heart that is displayed on the video monitor. You will be monitored continually throughout the procedure. The test itself lasts approximately 20 minutes. However, please allow approximately three hours; additional time is necessary in order to prepare you for the test, as well as to observe you for a while after the test is over.

Why is a Transesophageal Echocardiogram done?
